A Quick and Dirty Deck Interview

Raise your hand if you’re guilty as charged…

  • You LOVE perusing Etsy, Pinterest, and Instagram and new decks just happen to catch your eye…

  • You CAN’T HELP ordering a few here and there…okay all the time.

  • You have a number of decks collecting dust on your shelf that are SO pretty or cute but…you don’t really reach for them for your regular readings.

If your hand is raised, you’re in good company! Many of us have dozens and dozens of decks that we would LOVE to read with but…we just haven’t built that reliable connection with them that we can trust.

So how do we begin to get get to know a deck? We can interview them!

Why Should I Interview My Deck?

The more familiar you are with your deck, the more confident you will feel when interpreting your spreads. Just like you would take a new friend or a date out to coffee to get to know them, we need to get to know our cards in the same way. Of course, there are many ways to get to know your cards (including daily draws which I teach in my Free Mini Course) but interviewing your deck is a quick and easy way to get acquainted with a new deck OR to check in with a deck you may have had for awhile.

Although there are many fabulous deck interview questions out there, I use this simple, quick version so we can say our hellos and get to work!

What Kind of Cards Can I Interview?

Any kind! You can interview Tarot, Lenormand, Oracle decks and more. The interview questions in this post will work for any of these systems.

A note about interpreting Lenormand decks: Generally with Lenormand, the artwork of each particular deck is not taken into account when interpreting. However, in my own experience, I have found that each deck has a slightly different tone and timbre in answering questions. I find interviewing different Lenormand decks to be helpful in understanding the nuance of each deck. You can experiment with interviewing your Lenormand decks to see what kind of answers you get.

Here’s Your Quick and Dirty Deck Interview!

1) How would you describe your personality? (The deck’s personality)

2) How would you describe my personality? (You, the querent’s personality)

3) How would you like me to interact with you?

4) What advice do you have for me today?

Example Deck Interview

Here is a deck interview I did with the Lua Lenormand by Maree Bento. This is a fairly new deck for me so I decided it was time for us to have a heart to heart! My mother Ailynn and I interviewed a few decks in a live inside our Facebook Group, Magical Mentoring. If you like playing with cards and magic, please feel free to request to join the group! She interviewed two different Tarot decks there if you would like to see a Tarot example.

1) How would you describe your personality? (The deck’s personality)

Clouds + Sun + Bear

My Interpretation: “I will stop at nothing to illuminate situations. My big shining personality will clear doubt.

2) How would you describe my personality? (You, the querent’s personality)

Clover + Whip + Mice

My Interpretation: “You’re a charming workaholic that’s somewhat neurotic.” (Ask this second question at your own risk with Lenormand! Haha)

3) How would you like me to interact with you?

Dog + Garden + Sun

My Interpretation: “Make friends with me and use this deck out in the open (potentially outside) with others.”

4) What advice do you have for me today?

House + Heart + Stork

My Interpretation: “Nest in your home - make your home something you love.” We are expecting a baby in a couple months and I haven’t started on the nursery so…this called me out on my procrastination!

A Few Thoughts About Deck Interviews…

What if I get some unsavory answers from my deck (especially for the 2nd question)?

Especially for Lenormand…you may need to prep for some salty answers! Take it in stride. I mean…you just saw this deck call me a charming, somewhat neurotic workaholic #accurate. The deck may only be expressing one aspect of your personality. I recommend working with the deck ANYWAY and seeing how your answers change over time as you get to know each other better. If you play with the deck for a month or so, you may come back and do the deck interview again to see how the answers change over time!

What about interviewing a deck I know really well?

Try it! I notice when I interview a deck I know really well, I tend to get friendlier, deeper answers to the questions. Just like a relationship that has been cultivated over time, you can sometimes get some really touching and telling responses.

Which deck did you interview and what were your answers? Let me know in the comments!
