You're Not Atlas - You're the Whole Shebang.

The cards that inspired this post are from the Titiana’s Fortune Cards and the Thoth Tarot. Pictured in the title.

Hi Diviners,

I am not here to kumbaya this moment. But I’m also not here to paint a doomsday scenario. Instead, as I pull cards with my dog and cat leaning on me hot coffee in hand, I felt it may be of some use to share this complex yet simple message – the biggest, smallest, and most paradoxical idea that we continue to fall back on as humans to paint the landscape of this day for you, like a backstory that can orient you in time and space.

You have probably heard of the idea that you, as a human, are a microcosm of the entire universe. Within us is a galaxy of unincorporated matter, hardened substances, and the liquid that flows within us, pumping to keep us alive. Physical and non-physical, we are a product of what is inside of us. This is everyone. We are just a swirling population of huge little galaxies walking around, doing harm and good, trying to make sense of our strange and beautiful bodies. In our bumbling, we intentionally and unintentionally help and hurt others. That’s our world, or at least, one way to look at it.

Here’s the thing. When we are all exploring the microcosm of ourselves, we keep bumping up against the hardened matter within us that we’d rather not have and this makes us uncomfortable. In our blind and often ego filled pursuit we hit smack dab into our own implicit biases, old ideas that no longer serve us, and in some, hate. No matter how much we try to shame these things away, it doesn’t work because it’s there, and we can’t shame these things away just like we can’t shame the toaster into evaporating. Instead, what we can do is begin to make sense of why it is there, understand its properties so we can find the best recipe and technique to dissolve this matter. We can’t just bang our heads against its walls and hope for a better result, although it can be fun and cathartic to do sometimes.

The dissonance we are all feeling right now is not going away because that is part of who we are now. The condition of our world at the time of our own becoming was full of this hard matter we absorbed. All we can do is to dissolve it within ourselves and incorporate it into the fabric of our own being, transfiguring the substance so it becomes part of us, no longer distinguishable from our other parts.

This work is the most critical work in the whole world. Because, when you do this, you become whole and can now help others who want to do the same. As you know, the journey is never ending and bumpy and some fall off and never get back on course. Be the helper that picks them up. There will be some people only YOU can have that tough conversation with, or hold their hand as they feel their world is breaking, or ignite a fire that propels them to act instead of choosing apathy. Although it may seem selfish to focus on incorporating those parts of your own self at this time I believe it is an absolute prerequisite to honest goodness. If we can’t embrace the dark parts of ourselves, we can’t fully embrace others and we will never make lasting, whole hearted change in ourselves or the world.

When you begin to explore your own microcosm of yourself, you begin to understand the constellation of our world and once something is fully understood, you can have more of an impact. We begin to easily see the pockets we can be of use to create a better universe for all of us.

How do we get to this integration? How do we become whole? I know it seems impossible right now especially if you are experiencing hardship which many communities are experiencing on an astronomical scale. No matter how bad things seem the first thing you can do is explore the emotion you are feeling right now. No matter how negative, or positive, or how lodged it is in that lusciously gray area that we have all come to exist in. Hold it up to the light. Let it unfurl slowly and examine it. Who are you? Where do you come from? Then thank it for being there, for showing you part of your galaxy you may not have discovered before. Emotions are breadcrumbs that can lead you to the truth but don’t mistake the breadcrumb for the destination.

So, on this uncertain and eventful day I humbly ask you to remove the world from your shoulders. We have a lot of work to do in this world and we need whole people to do this or at least, those that walk the whole path. We will be able to serve communities with so much more heart, curiosity, warmth, and vigor if we are integrated within ourselves. This journey is terrible, and gorgeous, ugly, and worth it.

Love,

Emily
